Yamaha SY85 Synthesizer Sounddset Sysex Dumps --------------------------------------------- The Zip archive file "sy85-sysex.zip" contains a collection of complete sound banks for the Yamaha SY85 synthesizer as MIDI system exclusive (sysex) dumps. The majority of these soundsets use only the internal ROM waveforms, i.e. no extra samples need to be loaded into the sample RAM. This makes these soundsets convenient for loading via MIDI dumps since these dumps contain all neccessary information to load all sounds correctly and no floppy drive is needed. These soundsets were dumped using the "synth all" dump type, i.e. they contain all voices, drum voices, performances and setup data but no sequencer data or drum patterns. These have file names ending in "-synall.syx". Some soundsets have been dumped from the SY85 using the "all" dump type. These might include sequencer data and/or drum patterns and have file names ending in "-all.syx". A great number of availabe soundsets for the SY85 contain and use extra samples, which need to be loaded into the sample RAM. When you load these soundsets from floppy in the proprietary SY85 file format (file name extension '.G??', where '??' is a number from 01 to 99), the contained samples and their assignment to waveforms are loaded along with the voice and performance data. Alas, this is is not possible via MIDI sysex dumps. You can load single samples via the MIDI sample dump standard (SDS), which is *very* slow, but you will still need to recreate the waveforms (i.e. sample maps), which are referenced by the voices using these samples, and assign the samples to theses waveforms. This is a very tedious, time-consuming process. If you do not have non-volatile sample RAM, you will also need to load the samples and recreate the waveforms each time after you turn on the SY85! I have included the a few soundsets which use extra custom samples and have also included the samples in the proprietary "SY80 WAVE" file format (file name extension '.W??'). The samples are located in the "samples" sub-directory, with a sub-directory for each soundset. The SY85 loads and writes this sample file format the floppy drive. You can also send samples in this format via MIDI SDS with the software "Wave-2" (aka "Wave-to") for Windows. Alternatively, you can use an older version of the "Awave" sample editor to convert these files to WAV format and use other SDS-capable software to send the samples to the SY85 via MIDI. Apart from the two mentioned programs, to my knowledge there is no other software fr current computer systems, which is able to read or write this sample data format. Please note that this format is different from the format used by the Yamaha TX1616W sampler, though it uses the same file name extension scheme. The only other device known to understand the "SY80 WAVE" format is the Yamaha SY99 synthesizer.
